If you are one of the 85% of Americans suffering or having suffered from acne at one point in their lives, you probably have tried a number of different over the counter (OTC) products. OTC products treat mild acne and come in the form of gels, creams, lotions, scrubs, and cleansers. Simple to take over the counter acne pills have not yet been released.
The top over the counter acne medications are aimed at resolving mild acne and may not help severe forms. Don’t get down just yet. There still might be an over the counter treatment right for you.
Over the Counter Acne MedicationsBenzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is used to treat non-severe acne and usually, a difference can be seen as short as in 5 days. Benzoyl peroxide comes in many different percentages, however, the highest must be prescribed. Gel formulations are typically the most potent.
Dryness and skin irritation are side effects of benzoyl peroxide. To help avoid this side effect, start with a lower potency formulation (2.5%) and increase the strength (5% to 10%) as needed for acne control. Use it every other day if it’s still too potent and once your skin has adjusted, move up to twice daily or whatever has been recommended. Apply to clean (pat dry) skin to decrease the likelihood of irritating the skin.
As it has been discovered to produce free radicals, the major drawback of benzoyl peroxide is that it leads to cancer and causes premature aging, like persistent acne.
Benzoyl peroxide creates free radicals, which are known to damage skin and cause premature skin aging. The amount of damage depends on the strength of the benzoyl peroxide and the amount and length of use. Acne actually makes the skin age quicker and using benzoyl peroxide without success in acne elimination will make it mature exponentially faster.
Your skin produces hydrogen peroxide to fight every acne infection which may continue with regard to weeks until the contamination is resolved. Hydrogen peroxide is also a free radical. After incessant exposure, skin elements like collagen start to deteriorate which lead to sagging and wrinkles.
On top of that, the body’s healing process is a complicated mess of chemical processes. These processes release more free radicals naturally, adding to the amount the body must endure against.
Luckily, the skin has antioxidants that protect against free radical damage. Research is showing that severe and even moderate acne uses all of the skin’s antioxidants, leaving it defenseless to fight against the free radicals formed due to normal everyday body functions.
To stop skin aging, it is essential to find an acne skincare solution to stop acne (and its production of hydrogen peroxide) without creating more free radicals.
Azelaic acid is also effective for some people’s mild to moderate acne. It kills acne bacteria and reduces inflammation of the skin. Redness, burning, and itching are low incidences with azelaic acid.
Sulfur, Sodium Sulfacetamide, and Salicylic Acid
These are not as successful with treating acne as benzoyl peroxide but work well for mild acne. Side effects include the skin turning brown and some skin irritation, but markedly less than benzoyl peroxide.
