Cosmetics Engineering – This is progress supporting the informational report on interfacial engineering and cosmetic foundation. The purpose of this report is to inform the reader about the importance of interfacial engineering and the production of a cosmetic foundation. The audience for this report is students currently enrolled in dr. David Silverstein’s interfacial engineering course. So here’s a little bit of history and background of foundation the first traces of foundation were found in ancient Greece and Rome when women really would fair skin and so they would use white lead as some foundation and it turned out to be poisonous.
So a lot of the women got very sick or some of them even died in the 1930s. Max Factor came up with something called pancake foundation and several people still use that today but today there are multiple kinds of foundation for all different skin types because of the advancements. We’ve made in interfacial engineering, so here is some completed work that I have done.
So far I did some background research and so to get this completed I found some credible references for the topic as well as I use the information that. I collected from these references to describe the importance of international engineering and the production of cosmetic foundation, so this is what I found the building blocks of the foundation are water emulsifiers preservatives thickeners and clays. So let’s start with water only distilled water can be used for the production of foundation because you want to keep out any impurities.
That would be found in the foundation most often the water will be used as a solvent for the foundation and it also defines the consistency of the foundation most of the fires are also used. They keep water and oil from separating as most of us know water and oil do not mix because water is polar and oil is nonpolar. So the emulsifier will change the surface tensions of the water in the oil and a lot of the times it will either suspend water in oil or oil and water and the purpose of the emulsifier is to ensure a well mixed substance. That your foundation doesn’t separate, so you have preservatives elongate.

The life span of the foundation and the most common type you of preservative used in the foundation are parabens. These parabens will rid of any bacteria or impurities that would corrupt. The foundation and these impurities would cause the skin to be irritated, so you do not want that in your foundation you also have thickeners in your foundation and these keep the foundation, it’s ideal consistency. I found that there are four main types of thickeners found and foundation and those include lipid thickeners naturally derived mineral and synthetic thickeners.
The last main part of a foundation is clays. These clays are complex colloidal structures and they’re used as a flow controlling agent and cosmetics. So you will find mica clays most of the time in the foundation. The reason you find these is because they don’t swell in water also found. That there is a main ingredients found in a foundation and here’s a list of some of those at silica, glycerin, talc tocopherol and mineral oil.
A little about silica and for silica that is mostly used in cosmetic foundation because it does not have a definite form. Most Silica’s have crystals in them and you do not want that in your foundation. So you use the amphora silica. Silica is also used as a viscosity increasing agent and a pacifying agent though pacifying agent. Just allows there to be color in the foundation silica is also used as a also fire. That we talked about earlier and also as a mineral thickener that we talked about earlier.
Next, we have glycerine. Glycerine is the second most frequently used ingredient in foundation besides water. So glycerin will prevent the premature loss of moisture and it is also works as a viscosity decreasing agent.
Next, we have talc. Talc is a powdered hydrous magnesium silicate and it is a type of mica clay. That we discussed earlier. The tilt the talc is used to absorb moisture and oil and it is insoluble in water. We have tocopherol. Tocopherol is just another name for vitamin E. It’s a viscous oil and most of the time we use tocopherol in a in the production of a foundation. We use tocopherol acetate because it just has the ester part of the tocopherol the tocopherol is used to remove any potentially damaging oxidizing agents and then actually we have mineral oil mineral oil is obtained from refining petroleum which sounds kind of scary. You don’t think of her putting petroleum on your face but before you can put the petroleum in foundation it has to be completely purified.
The refinement and it has to be approved by the FDA as well, so the mineral oil is used to moisturize the skin and it’s also used as a solvent for the foundation. So before I complete my report I have to strengthen my conclusion.
