Believe it or not, following a healthy diet you can greatly improve the condition of your skin. Perhaps you recall a family member or friend warning you back in high school about French fries and chocolate causing acne and discarded it as a myth at the time. But they were right, after all. What you consume does affect your skin health, and dietary changes can usually make living with psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, dandruff, eczema or severe acne much less trying.
Increased awareness of what you are putting into your body each day is a great starting point in identifying possible pitfalls. Currently, American people are following a sort of acne diet, usually full of refined sugars, processed and fast foods, high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, hydrogenated oils, and several artificial flavorings and colors. The procedures of ultra-processing the foods we consume usually strip out valuable vitamins and nutrients and replace them with artificial components that can exacerbate already existing inflammatory conditions.
Some experts declare that accumulation of toxins in the body is the cause of dermatitis, acne and other skin conditions. Some declare that due to the toxic nature of many of foods commonly consumed and a weak intestinal lining, our blood can contain a build-up of poisons. The liver and kidneys cannot filter the skin fast enough to eliminate these toxins from the body. Other organs such as the skin become the fail-over filter. And this leads to skin outbreaks.
Curiously, people suffering psoriasis seem also to have a higher incidence of food allergies and sensitivities. The most common food allergens are gluten and dairy. That may not mean you have overt lactose intolerance or celiac disease, but a milder sensitivity harder to identify. If you have psoriasis, it can be a good idea to eliminate gluten and dairy from your diet and see if your skin responds. Although a vegetarian diet is recommended, a few fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, strawberries, and eggplant can usually worsen your symptoms and should be avoided. Other items like fried foods, caffeine, heavily processed foods, soda, and alcohol may cause increased inflammation, and you must absolutely avoid them if you suffer from psoriasis. If you notice any reaction from other foods, you would do well to avoid them as well.
A healthy skin diet, rich in fruits and vegetables and their juices, plus the right natural skin care products, can help to alleviate some of the unpleasantness associated not only with psoriasis but other skin ailments as well, such as rosacea and acne. In addition to liberal amounts of water, no less than eight glasses each day, individuals should aim to fill most of their diet with fresh fruits like mangoes, grapes and peaches, and vegetables such as squash, cucumbers, and lettuce. Very limited amounts of meats and low-fat dairy products, eggs, and olive oil are also recommended. Eating these kinds of foods is not only beneficial to people suffering from skin ailments but is also a great way for people not currently affected to maintain their healthy skin and avoid future ailments from appearing.
