Acne affects almost 90% of all human beings. his common form of skin disorder is mostly seen in young adults of both sexes; however people of all ages may be affected by acne. Acne has its own healing process unless it is too severe. While it is healing, acne leaves behind a mark which takes some time to disappear. Acne scars may be generally classified into 2 major classes. The scars can either be formed by excessive tissue formation of due to heavy loss of tissue. The types of acne scar depend on inflammation of the skin, and how the skin responds to it.
Scars Due To Excessive Tissue Formation
This form of acne scar is technically called hypertrophic scars or keloids. These develop due to the excessive deposit of collagen tissues. There is an abundance of collagen formation in the body when the skin tries to recover from any kind of skin injury. Keloids are formed when fibrous tissues: smooth, firm and irregularly shaped’ gets accumulated at a point. Keloids mostly occur in human beings who have this characteristic skin trait running in their families. They can be seen in males. The size if the scars are roughly 1-2 mm in diameter, which may sometimes, is up to 1 cm in size if it is unusually big. They are not a very pleasing sight for the eyes, and usually, don’t disappear but reduce in size and intensity with time.
There are various types of acne scars caused by loss of tissue. The scars formed after chickenpox is also due to loss of tissue and are found more commonly than keloids. There are numerous types of acne scars like ice pick scars. They are formed like a mound with steep edges and soft or hard to touch. The softer once can improve on stretching, but the harder ones are difficult to remove.
Depressed fibrotic scars are tough and edgy to the feel and are big sized. Some smaller scars may eventually develop into depressed fibrotic scars.
Soft scars are usually smooth to the touch and can be oblong or rounded in shape.
Atrophic macules are uneven based and slippery to the feel, they vary in size but begin small. Sometimes they appear with a bluish tinge when there is blood vessel lying underneath. In fair-skinned people, they are less visible as they change color to ivory with time.
Follicular macular atrophy appears mostly like very small wounds in the form of big dots on the chest and back, they give the impression of whiteheads and can linger from months to years.
There are too many types of acne scars and not all of them can be healed. They are mostly harmless in nature but look uncouth on the skin.
